Description
Jim Goldberg Greek Archbishop 1969 Photograph
Silver-gelatin print, signed and dated in pencil lower right “J. Goldberg 69/76”, titled “Greek Archbishop” lower left, with dedication “To my friend and adviser Ron –” at center.
An exceptionally scarce early portrait from documentary photographer Jim Goldberg, taken during his formative years before international acclaim for Rich and Poor and Raised by Wolves. Captured on Goldberg’s early travels, this arresting close-up reveals the emotional gravity and realism that would later define his social-documentary practice.
Early prints from the 1960s–70s are virtually unseen at auction and rarely available outside institutional collections. The dual-date notation likely references the image capture and later darkroom printing, a convention Goldberg used on early works.
Condition: Image excellent; light age toning to mat; minor wear and paper loss to backing; original chrome frame intact.
Medium: Silver-gelatin print on fiber paper
Dimensions:16″ x 20″ with frame
Date: Image 1969 / Print ca. 1976
